14 Simple Ways to Be Healthier Every Single Day


It’s probably safe to say we all wish we lived healthier lives, full of many 6 a.m. yoga classes and absolutely zero 10 p.m. ice cream sundaes. Alas, life. Still, bettering oneself is a noble pursuit, and we’re committed to seeking out small improvements that have big impacts. That way, the road to healthy living doesn’t feel quite so insurmountable that we throw in the towel entirely. To inspire you to live healthier each day, we’ve rounded up 14 simple habits that make all the difference. Read on.
Get moving.

Bike to work. Do a set of jumping jacks in the morning. Buy a jump rope and spend five minutes perfecting your double dutch. Put on a playlist of four or five songs, and dance like no one’s watching. Do leg flutters under your desk while you work at your computer (no one will even notice!). Set an alert for yourself for every hour or so and make a point to walk to the kitchen for a cup of tea or stroll to a co-worker’s desk to say hi.
Cool off. 

Though a hot, steamy shower is the stuff of daydreams, it can actually be damaging to your skin and hair health. Because no one really wants to take an icy shower, try to find a happy medium and cool it down a touch, or at least turn the temperature down during the last two minutes of your shower. Even this burst of cold will do your body good, closing your pores and hair follicles (and waking you right up).
Stretch. 

Throughout the day, pay attention to your body, and stretch when you’re feeling cramped, tired, or just generally in need of a pick-me-up. Try a couple of sun salutations first thing in the morning to get your blood flowing, and end your day with a slow, seated stretch of bending at your hips to touch your toes. Hang out in these positions for as long as feels necessary.

Look up. 

The next time you’re walking down a street, put your phone away and allow your eyes to wander. Notice details. Challenge yourself to pay attention to things you might normally ignore. Pause before going inside, and look up at the sky, the clouds, or the moon.

Hydrate.

Drink an extra glass of water every day. Better yet, drink a few extra glasses. To help in this, try drinking a glass of water before every meal. Oftentimes we mistake thirst for hunger, and drinking a tall glass of H2O will actually help you feel fuller, longer.

Commit to citrus.

Drink a cup of warm water with lemon juice in the morning. The benefits of sipping the antioxidant-rich beverage are numerous: It reduces inflammation, aids digestion, and boosts energy, to name just a few.

Be one with nature. 

Whether that means taking a break from your office to stand outside in the sunshine, waking up a little earlier to take a walk around your neighborhood, or beelining it to the beach at morning’s first light, it’s all good. The health benefits of nature are well documented, with studies suggesting being outside can ease depression, improve focus, increase creativity, and even strengthen your immune system.

Take the stairs.

Whether it’s at work or home, there’s always that moment of pause where you can opt to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Challenge yourself to get walking. While you’re at it, inject a little bit of training into your flight climbing. As you take a step, plant your foot more firmly into the floor, allowing the entirety of your foot to meet the step, then burst out of your step and into the next.

Perfect your posture. 

Sit up a little straighter and stand a little taller! Bad posture has all kinds of negative health impacts, including chronic muscle pain, reduced circulation, headaches, and even bad moods. Sitting up straight and assuming the body language of victory actually has a proven-positive impact on your health, both physical and mental.

Practice mindful eating. 

Many of us are in the habit of eating at our desks, in front of the television, or absentmindedly while we do another task (or two or three). Try to slow down the act of eating. Focus on taste, consistency, and your enjoyment. When you can, eat your meals sitting down at a table, where all you are doing is eating and reflecting.

Meditate.

The best times to take a stab at some meditation are first thing in the morning before you’ve caffeinated (but after you’ve gotten up and splashed some water on your face) and in the evening before dinnertime. Take some time to sit quietly and close your eyes. Find a comfortable spot to sit that has back support, and tuck yourself into a cozy blanket. Repeat a mantra, concentrate on positive thinking, focus on deep breathing, or just allow your mind to wander. The benefits of meditation are manifold, and even a “failed” attempt provides a much-needed break.

Wind down.

Turn off all your technology 15 to 30 minutes before bedtime. Even something as harmless as checking your phone just before going to sleep can disrupt your sleep pattern, as the bright screens excite optic nerves and make your eventual sleep less restful.

Give your eyes a break.

Eye health experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule in order to preserve eye health, cut down on eye strain, and reduce eye strain–related headaches. For every 20 minutes you spend on the computer, glance away from the screen for at least 20 seconds by looking at something 20 feet away.

Get enough sleep. 

Not getting enough sleep is one of the most consistent indicators of poor health. Though everyone is different, adults generally require between seven and eight and a half hours of sleep per night. If you aren’t sure how much you require, pay attention to your energy levels and mood each day, and tweak accordingly.

It’s frustrating, isn’t it?


You dream of a life where you have more freedom—your work nourishes your mind and soul, your home is organized, and you have ample time to exercise and eat right.

It’s not that your current situation is awful, but you long to do more of the things you love. Yet when you contemplate radical changes, your heart rate quickens, and you convince yourself it’s just not the right time.

So you keep waiting for the big moment when you can make that big change that will lead to happiness.

Well, you’re wasting your time …

Our ability to feel happier comes from inside ourselves, not from external circumstances. You don’t need to quit your job, move to an exotic location, or lose weight to be happy. You can embody happiness right now.

Over the years, I’ve gotten better at aligning my life activities with my purpose.

I teach at my own yoga studio. I assumed this would make me happy 100 percent of the time, but I get derailed sometimes. I ruminate about the small things like our cluttered house, and the endless details of running a yoga studio. I forget the big picture. I forget all that I have. I get grumpy and start to nitpick.

I have to catch myself and find my happiness from within again. It might take a few minutes, hours, or days, but I use these mini-habits to help me get there. They cost little to nothing and are portable.

No matter your situation, you can start right now. The following habits will help you stand a little taller, smile from your heart, and shine a little brighter.

For Your Mind

1. Breathe deeply.

Inhale deeply, and exhale completely ten times. Deep breathing slows your thoughts, relaxes your nervous system, and brings you closer to your own intuition.

2. Use a mantra to change your mind-set.

Sha is a Sanskrit root word meaning peace, as in “shanti.” Say “sham” slowly ten to twenty times. By combining sound, breath, and rhythm, mantra channels the flow of energy through the mind-body circuit and calms your nervous system and mind.

3. Zone out. 

Spend a few minutes daydreaming. Your logical mind, the prefrontal cortex, is constantly planning, analyzing, and thinking about the future. Give it a rest, and just be for a little while; you’ll feel refreshed.

4. Express your love.

Write a note or tell a loved one how you appreciate them. Communicating positive emotions lowers stress hormones, bad cholesterol, and blood pressure, and it strengthens immunity.

5. Rejuvenate your mind.

Close your eyes for a few moments. What do you see in the darkness of your mind’s eye? Notice the patterns that form. This is a simple meditation that rejuvenates and refocuses your tired mind.

6. Explore healing aromas.

Plants like rosemary, lavender, and sage can improve our moods. Create your own natural spa. Put your favorite essential oils in a spray bottle with a little water.

7. Swap a thought.

Make a list of your positive traits and attributes. When you criticize yourself, refer to this list. Keep this pattern up and you’ll transform your inner dialogue.

8. Allow yourself to be.

Accept all your feelings about your present situation. They are valid, whether you like them or not. Accepting your current situation is the first step to feeling happier.

9. Loving-kindness meditation.

Loving-kindness builds positive emotions, which increases mindfulness and purpose in life. Spend a few minutes letting feelings of love and kindness for someone wash over you.

10. Meditate.

When thoughts come, return to your breath without judging. Deep breathing clears your mind and decreases your stress levels, which will allow you to feel happier.

11. Declutter one spot.

Declutter one surface or area. Starting small is easier. But when your home and workspace are clear from clutter, your mind feels more spacious.

For Your Body

12. Lighten up.

Once a day, laugh at yourself. When you make a mistake, see the humor in your error. Laughing is great medicine, it improves your mood, and it relieves stress and tension.

13. Stretch your body.

Sitting in a chair? Push away from your desk. Inhale, and as you exhale, bend forward, moving your ribs toward your thighs. Breathe deeply. Get out of your mind and into your body and the present moment.

14. Stretch your breath.

Hold onto the back of your chair, and breathe deeply. This opens up your rib cage and lungs, allowing you to breath more deeply. The added oxygen to your brain will make you feel alive and alert.

15. Give yourself a massage.

Use coconut oil or sesame oil on your skin, massage it on your whole body, and then take a warm shower to help your skin absorb the oil. This is a home spa treatment that is used all over India. Touch is calming, and you can reap its benefits without buying expensive massages.

16. Take a bath.

Relax and enjoy the simple pleasure of a warm bath. Light some candles, and put on your favorite music. Soothe your body with this simple ritual. Why dream about getting away when you can create a calming environment in your home?

17. Place your palms over your eyelids.

This relaxes your eyes and mind. This is especially helpful if you have a headache or feel fatigued.

18. Practice Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep).

Take ten minutes to relax your whole body completely and then each part of your body in turn. This magical practice is as efficient as taking a longer nap.

19. Eat with complete attention. 

Put away all your screens. Savor your meal by noticing all its tastes and textures. You’ll improve your digestion and feel more relaxed as a result.

20. Move every day.

Even if you have very little time. You only need five minutes to stretch or walk outside. Building a little movement into your day is better for your health than one longer weekly workout.

21. Hug someone or something. 

Like your friend, pet, or even yourself. Soothing touch is relaxing and calming.

For Your Spirit

22. Stop and pay attention.

Are birds chirping? Horns blasting? Voices passing? Notice your world right now, and see the beauty that is unfolding under your nose. You’ll feel a little better about your situation.

23. Make a mini-gratitude list.

What are three things from the past twenty-four hours that can go on your list? Making gratitude a permanent trait is proven to make us happier, healthier, and live longer.

24. Give thanks for your meals.

Saying thanks for having enough will remind you of how much you have. Remember that eight million people don’t have enough food to lead a healthy, active life.

25. Get outside and unplug.

Spend time outdoors without your digital devices. Notice the small details of your surroundings — the flowers, the trees, even the small ants on the sidewalk. You’ll feel peaceful and calm as a result.

26. Spend time with friends.

Socializing is a secret of the world’s longest-lived people. Set a weekly meeting. Go for a walk, drink tea, or simply enjoy each others’ presence.

27. Listen.

When people talk, listen to them. Be 100 percent present with your company, and you’ll get their appreciation in return.

28. Love your furry friends.

They can be our best friends and show undying loyalty. Spending time petting a dog can improve your mood and even strengthen your heart.

29. Find a beautiful natural thing around you.

Pick a flower, leaf, twig, or fruit. Remind yourself of all the natural wonders that surround you right now. It’s easy to overlook the beauty in the present moment.

30. Take a mini-vacation.

Once a week, I take my toddler and dog to the park for a picnic lunch. We relax and listen to the birds. Leave your busy life for a few moments to be with loved ones who are crucial to your happiness.

31. Give a little bit.

Carry canned food for people asking for food. Make eye contact. Recognize the common human spirit in every person you meet, right in your neighborhood.

Life Is Happening Right Now ... Feel More Alive



"I wouldn't put it past me to fling myself off the side of a mountain."

We were talking about hang gliding, in case you're wondering.

There's something I love about the things in this life that remind me how small and insignificant I am. That, in the grande scheme, I don't really matter. Things like mountain peaks that tower so high above me I momentarily forget to breathe, and the ocean that runs so deep it throws off my sense of balance just to try and comprehend. And the stars... oh, how I love the stars.

I think it's this same appreciation for immensity that triggers my inner daredevil. A desire to do the things that make you feel alive and remind you just how fragile life really is. That cause your entire body to buzz as every single cell is activated. Snapping yourself instantly out of the daze of the day to day and into the moment like you rarely ever experience.

Nope, I wouldn't put it past me to fling myself off the side of a mountain.

There are often times as I'm climbing mountain trails and pausing to appreciate the many peaks that surround me that I think this very thing. How I just want to fly off the side of a mountain. That I want to see the world from the sky and feel the exhilaration that comes with barreling towards the earth.


But there are better ways to feel alive... Simple ways really, and they all begin with presence and courage.

Presence is about being here now.

Presence is experiencing everything the moment has to offer... from the miracle that is breath to the beauty that is a sunset to the pain that is heartbreak and loss. Seeing the detail in the things that litter our everyday and the uniqueness of every individual that graces us with their presence. Feeling the feelings and experiencing the richness that is this life and world. Presence will make you feel alive and allow you to tap into a space in yourself that guides you to passion and love and fulfillment.

Miracles and inspiration and beauty are in the tiny details we often overlook because we're in too much of a hurry to get on to the next. Depth and connection are in the simple looks and subtle phrases we can't seem to register when we're multitasking or thinking about our response. Divine guidance and intuitive hits exist in the body, which we fail to connect with when we're mentally juggling the to do list and dinner menu and the calls we forgot to return last week.

Presence is about living life fully and completely, moment to moment. Because as cliche and overused as it may be, this moment is all we have.

Courage is about showing up fully.

It's not just reserved for those that go to war and run into burning buildings. Courage is something we can all choose, every single moment of every single day. It's about putting ourselves out there and risking what feels safe and comfortable for that which feels passionate and truly fulfilling on a cellular level. Courage is about putting yourself on the line and, as Brené Brown says, "vulnerability is our most accurate measure of courage."

And the fact is, you're not really living if you're not getting vulnerable. Exposing your heart to the ones you love. Expressing your fears and failures. Speaking your truth and owning your story. You're not living if you're playing it safe.

The thing about flinging yourself off the side of a mountain is that you're forced to face the moment. You're forced to face the things you've been avoiding and the dreams you tucked aside. You're forced to see that life doesn't last forever, and that time really is limited.

Life is happening right now, and chances are you've lost yourself in the day to day and the many items that make up your to do list.

I'm not asking you to throw out the to do list or fling yourself off the side of a mountain. I'm simply asking you to pay attention as best you can... to bring yourself into the moment as fully as you're able, and to be a little more courageous with the people in your life.

To live life a little more fully, and with a lot more intention.

The Power of your Mind, the motor of your Life

Our present life is a consequence of our past acts but is not necessarily a statement of our future. We all have the power to shape our life by the actions we can take on a daily basis in our present. But how that can happen?

Change is a constant, we all grow daily physically and mentally; knowledge is accumulated in our mind collected from every good and bad experience that we have. This experience can be used in our favor if we pay attention to what we can do with this newly acquired knowledge. 

Our mind is a source of ideas, created by inspiration, comparison or simple logic.  This ideas are only ideas if we don't have the self believe to make then happen, and when we take control of "the making", then we can affect the present moment by creating the small steps to the future change and achievement. 

Let's take for example our health. To be healthy is not purely down to luck,accepting that somethings are out of our hands. However, in accordance withe basis of asian medicine, we all can work on preventing health diseases by taking actions today to avoid future problems.  Exercising, eating well, keeping the mind calm may sound like cliches or a very easy way to think, but when we train our body and mind, we are taking care of our future. With every healthy day that we make, we are creating a better future for our being. If we don't eat properly we are not building a solid health base of our future. So then the daily actions are creating and sharing a brighter tomorrow. 

We can talk about other examples like work, personal relationships or happiness, any of these aspects of life are all affected by today's actions. If we create the best environment around us adding great feelings, positive ideas and actions, we can start shaping the results we are looking for. 

Our mind is a powerful achiever. If we think and act negatively, the results will not match our dreams. If we don't believe in what we are doing, if we don't love or completely get involved in what we are doing, we will not be able to achieve great results, because our mind  will not create the right determination upon concrete actions.  

Take for example a sportsman participating in a hight demanding sport. Despite that all the participants have the same skills, knowledge and abilities, only the mental power will define the winner. Only those with the right mental determination will be able to compete at their best. Only the ones who will be able to adapt to the conditions of the game or race will be able to achieve their goal.  Only those prepared to win will win.

We are all sportsman in the same sport: Life; and our most important skill should be our mind and it's power to achieve actions. Because we can all dream and dream about our future, but those prepared to take steps and actions are the ones who will cross the line of achievements. 

We want to leave you with three important points that will help you to focus the power of your mind in tune to your dreams: 


1) Visualize your Dream:  Our mind works better when it can read our dreams, so place your dreams on paper, write what you want and how you think you can achieve it. Visualize the steps and the short term actions. If you want to climb a mountain start training yourself, knowing everything about that mountain and visualizing your climbing success. Small steps will make the climb easier and more achievable. 

2) Stay in the Present Moment: To stay in the present is crucial for the achievement of your dreams. If you expend all of your time in the past or in the future, you will never be able to complete the necessary actions toward your dreams. Training your mind with Mindfulness or Meditation practices can help you to stay and enjoy each moment, allowing you to use all available knowledge you can collect in your daily observations. When we are completely focused in our present, we are able to build the steps to reaching our goals.

3) Believe in yourself: Knowing who you are, where you are in your life and where you want to be is very important for any goal achievement. Its not valid to keep saying to yourself " I don't know who I am".  We may never be able to completely understand the total of our mind, but we need to take a step forward and  and believe in the person we want to be. 
We create our being and our future by our own actions, habits, ideas and beliefs.

From this base we can look forwards and start writing our future, don't wait until the moment comes to you, create it from the bases of your own believe, of your own dreams  but more importantly of your own actions and the power of your mind. Believe in you :)

7 Daily Habits for A Happy Mood


In our daily life we all have good and bad times, which can make it hard to stay happy. Wether we are having a life crisis, a divorce, sickness or just a bad day, a change of attitude can make us feel better. 

Happiness doesn't come from other people, or things or even feelings. It comes from our decision to take control of our present, accept what we are and understand where we are in our life. 

But, how can some people always stay happy regardless their situation? 

We have put together 6 tips on how you can stay happy, and I mean truly happy: 

1. Be grateful with your world

Gratitude is always confused with the act of "Saying Thanks" to people when they do something for you. But Gratitude is a more complex and general term than that. It involves the idea of understanding what is happening in your life, opening our mind to observe who we are and where we are in our life story.

More importantly accepting that if we want to walk forwards we need to accept and recognize all the positive things we have already in our life. 
Gratitude is having the right positive attitude that will help to create the next pleasant moment. 
Be grateful with nature, with your health even if you don't have it, be grateful with all those things you want to call into your life.

2.Happiness is a choice, make it your habit: 

When we decide to look at the world will positive eyes, we can find confidence, harmony and self believe. When we look at the situations with a clear mind, our decisions are better and we become happier. Also when you practice Happiness you will feel healthier, kinder and positive in every area of your life.
Recognize your blessings and start to enjoy you present .

3.Recharge your energy in Nature: 

A daily walk in the forest, countryside or a park can give you so much. When you look at nature and observe it's perfection, colors and changes, you can get inspired to start your day with a clean perspective, knowing that nature is the best teacher to learn from about patience, resilience and growth.
Deep breathing will give you more clarity of mind, a clear view of the ideas, problems or challenges. When in nature, try to hug a tree, smell flowers, touch the grass and feel the air; all of these elements will recharge your soul, Its like meditating with open eyes.

4.Be Kind with others, we are fighting battles 

Recognize other's efforts by acknowledging their achievements. We are all on similar journey's, trying to walk different parts, finding the right way or the right road, if we only look to other with ego and jealousy, we will never be able to feel happiness in our daily being. 
Nobody is competing with you, because your journey is at your pace and you will face your own obstacles. 
So being kind with our selves and others will help to make us more positive in life. 
Try to look at everyone like a part of the world and not like a part of a race. We are all unique and we all deserve respect and kindness, be the one to start living by example.

5.Keep yourself inspired: 

When we keep our mind inspired we are creating goodness. Make your dreams come true with little daily actions, keep active in the pursuit of your goals, surround yourself with things that reflect your dreams, your thoughts, your feelings. 
Put positive energy around your and keep it flowing. Visualizing your thoughts is a great way to give them life, you can write ideas, paint them and take actions that will get you close to them. Happy people will take actions to achieve their dreams, and keep themselves busy and inspired.

6.Act now, don't dream in future

People who stay happy live in the now, the present moment, the present feeling, the present action.  When you decide to focus on to what is happening now, your actions are more accurate and your decisions more efficient. If your mind in in the future, you will not achieve anything now, and now is the next step for tomorrow. 
So if you want to love, do it now, if you want to create start now, if you want to forget start now.  Our actions now will define the results of tomorrow. If you want to be happy tomorrow, then start today.  Live in your now, not in your dreams.

7.You are not happy because everything is perfect: 

Our actual world is full of many unfortunate things like poverty, hunger, wars, abuse and political issues, but we can't wait for everything to be repaired to be happy. 
By being happy, you are not turning your back to the problem, on the contrary you are understanding the blessing in your life and the fact that you can help others by being helpful, kind and supportive. If you are sad or mad, you will never be able to do things to change your world. 
But if you keep a positive attitude you can bring faith to others, you can help your community, or you just can be a good citizen in order to be part of a changing society. A good attitude will not remove unfortunate events, but it will change how you react to events, and most importantly, will lead you to a healthier and happier life. 

Turn all those negative thoughts into happy, loving and kind thoughts by consciously managing the habit of a positive attitude. Use your energy to keep it.

10 Ways to Bring Joy into your Day


Here are Ten simple actions to a better, more joyful and proactive life: 

1. Smile! 

I was going to write smile ending with a period, but what I really mean is to smile with an explanation point. This means no fake smiles. No smiles where you don't see your teeth. A real full face mood lifting smile.  Smile at people you pass. Smile at your reflection. Smile at babies. Smile at dogs. Smile at the squirrel running across the road. 
Try it for one day and see how you feel. If you hate it and smiling brings you no joy, then you never have to smile again.

2. Put on your favorite happy song and do a happy dance. 

My go to song is "You Make My Dreams Come True" by Hall & Oates. It's impossible for me to be pissed off when I hear that song and it's impossible for me to not dance. 
What's your happy song?

3. Write yourself a thank you note. 

You are freakin' awesome and it's about time you thank yourself for all the amazing things you do.

4. Get rid of the clutter. 

Don't go crazy getting rid of everything in your home. Find a couple of things that are adding to your clutter and either throw them away, give them away, or donate them. Maybe it's an article of clothing that every time you put it on, you don't like the way you feel in it. Maybe it's something from an ex that you stare at everyday and it makes you mad. Maybe it's something someone bought you and you really didn't need it or want it, but for some reason you feel bad getting rid of it.
Now is the time. Make room for the things that bring you massive amounts of joy.

5. Make a list of 10-20 things that make you happy. 

It's your own personal joy list. If you are feeling really down, pull out the list and do something on it. That way you won't have to waste any energy trying to think of what to do. 
No excuses!

6. Start each morning by having a joy party in your bed. 

My friend Suzanne Boothby introduced me to the idea of starting each day with a party. To do this, wake up a couple of minutes early and spend some time doing things you love. My joy parties consist of activities such as watching funny YouTube videos, writing in my gratitude journal, jumping on my bed, dancing and singing to music, listening to inspiring podcasts and meditating. 
What would your morning joy party look like? 

7. Take a mini vacation in your head. 

Turn off the computer, put your phone on silent and close your office door. Take a couple of minutes and daydream about a vacation you want to take. Really dive into the visualization. 
If your daydream vacation is to go to the beach, then smell the ocean, feel the sand in between your toes, feel the warm ocean breeze on your skin and listen to the sound of the waves crashing. It's amazing what a little brain "getaway" can do for the soul.

8. Do a good deed. 

Doing nice things for others has an amazing side effect...it makes you feel good, too!  It's pretty much a win-win for all involved.

9. Laugh. 

What makes you laugh? Talking to a funny friend? Watching a funny movie? Looking at clips of laughing babies on youtube? Listening to your favorite comedian? Whatever it is that hits you in the funny spot and makes you laugh...make time to do it. 

10. Wear a color you feel fabulous in. 

It's amazing how different you feel when you wear all black compared to when you wear hot pink or bright green. Put on an outfit in the color of your choice and strut your fine self around town.

6 Foods That Can Make You Happier

I’m a happiness research junkie. I love reading about simple things we can do to elevate mood and boost contentment. Mindfulness meditation, adequate sleep, laughing, volunteering, and spending time with pets (as well as with happy people) all help. And believe it or not, science shows you can also eat your way happier!
If you’re in need of a little more glee, here are six research-backed “better mood foods” to build into your eating repertoire.
Probiotic-rich foods
In a recent Dutch study, 20 healthy volunteers received either a probiotic supplement or a placebo for four weeks. Those who received the real deal showed a significantly reduced reactivity to sad mood, which was largely due to a reduction in aggressive thoughts and rumination (you know, when you over-think or obsess on the negative). The conclusion: the type and amount of bacteria in your digestive tract impacts your mood. Scientists even have a name for it: the gut-brain axis, or the communication highway between the GI tract and the brain, and it’s fascinating.
In an animal a study conducted at McMaster University in Ontario, gut bacteria from mice with different personalities were swapped. Fearless mice became timid after receiving gut bacteria from anxious counterparts, and the reverse was also true -- fearful rodents became more expressive and less apprehensive. The researchers also found that aggressive mice became calm when scientists changed their gut microbes by health-ing up their diets. All of this means that, for all intents and purposes, your gut bacteria can literally be mind-altering. To reap the benefits, stock up on probiotic-rich fermented foods, including kimchi, sauerkraut and kefir, or consider popping a probiotic supplement.
Fruits and veggies
In a study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology, nearly 300 young adults kept daily food journals for three consecutive weeks, in addition to completing psychological and mood-related ratings. Researchers found that a higher intake of produce resulted in more energy, calm and a greater sense of happiness. They also noted that the effects were seen not only on the days more veggies and fruits were consumed, but also throughout the following day. Another study, published in the journal Social Indicators Research, which tracked 80,000 adults, found that consuming a higher amount of produce boosted mental well-being, with the magic number for happiness being seven daily servings. To use produce to elevate your mood, choose fruits and veggies first and build each meal around them. Coffee
Coffee drinkers can be thought of as curmudgeons, but research has actually linked regular java consumption to positivity. In one study, researchers found that coffee consumed in the morning was linked to energy, kindness and pleasure. Coffee enjoyed socially was tied to affection, friendship, satisfaction, and good nature; and when sipped leisurely, cups of Joe induced calm, happiness and tranquility. Another study, published in the JAMA Internal Medicine, found that women who drank two to three cups of coffee a day were 15 percent less likely to develop depression over a 10-year span, compared to those who consumed one cup or less each day. Now that doesn’t mean a pot a day is a recipe for bliss, but if you enjoy coffee there are other health benefits to making it a daily habit. Dark chocolate
Even thinking about dark chocolate brings a smile to my face, but research backs its happiness benefits. The antioxidants in dark chocolate can trigger the walls of your blood vessels to relax, lowering blood pressure and improving circulation. That may be why one study found that eating about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate daily for two weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in people who rated themselves as highly stressed. Dark chocolate also contains magnesium, a mineral that has been shown to help alleviate PMS symptoms, including fatigue, depression and irritability. Finally, dark chocolate’s unique natural substances trigger a sense of euphoria that’s similar in to the feeling of being in love! For more check out my 5 Healthy Ways to Eat More Chocolate.
Mushrooms
I adore mushrooms. In a previous post I wrote about five surprising benefits of this underrated superfood, and due to their unique nutrients, mood regulation may be a sixth. Shrooms are rich in selenium and research has linked a deficiency of this mineral (which doubles as an antioxidant) to a higher risk of depression, anxiety and fatigue. Mushrooms are also the only plant source of natural vitamin D, a key nutrient of us aren’t getting enough of. In a study of people with seasonal affective disorder, which affects 11 million Americans, scientists found that those who upped their vitamin D intake experienced an enhanced mood. To bolster your intake, incorporate mushrooms into omelets or quiche at breakfast, salads at lunch and sauté, grill, or oven roast them at dinner.
Green tea
A Japanese study, conducted with more than 40,000 people, found that levels of psychological stress were 20 percent lower in people who drank five or more cups of green tea per day compared to those who drank less than one. The results held true even after other factors were accounted for, including age, sex, medical history, body mass index, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and diet. Reach for green tea as a beverage, or incorporate loose tea leaves or brewed green tea into cooking. It’s fantastic in smoothies, marinades, soups and sauces. 10 possible health benefits of drinking Tea

Did you know that a variety of teas have been researched for health benefits? I share 10 possible benefits to drinking black, green, white, rooibos and honeybush teas.
A recent Australian study linked black tea to a modest lowering of blood pressure, and I thought it would be fun to share other possible health benefits of drinking tea.
1. Green tea has cancer-fighting properties: A catechin called EGCG found in green tea has been linked in various studies to a reduction in cancer rates. It may help in the reduction of the following types of cancer: bladder colon, esophagus, pancreas, rectum and stomach.
2. Green tea consumption linked to lower risk of coronary artery disease: In a Japanese study, researchers found that the more green tea you drink, the less chance you will have of developing coronary artery disease. 
3. Green tea may reduce the risk of blood clots and strokes: "Green tea also lowers fibrinogen, which is a substance in the body that can cause clots and strokes." — "150 Healthiest Foods on the Planet" by Jonny Bowden, Ph.D
4. Black tea may help soothe away the stresses of life: A 2010 study by UCL (University College London) found that those who drank a cup of black tea where able to de-stress faster when compared to those drinking a placebo.
5. Drinking green tea results in a modest reduction in breast cancer risk.
6. Rooibos (a caffeine-free, herbal tea) may reduce and treat metabolic diseases. 
7. Rooibos and honeybush teas may help with skin cancer: In one study, rooibos and honeybush extracts suppressed skin cancers in mice, giving hope for a future in human studies.
8. Rooibos may be anti-aging: Or, at least a study done with quail found that it helped their egg production capabilities last longer. Since birds are a proposed animal for anti-aging studies, this holds hope that rooibos may help humans as well.  
9. White tea was found to be more protective against oxidative stress when compared to green tea.
10. Rooibos tea (both red and green) were shown to have the highest protection for male fertility against oxidative stress: In a study that tested the oxidative stress reducing properties of supplements made from green tea, red rooibos, green rooibos, or Chinese green tea, rooibos extracts helped protect sperm health the most.
Drinking a variety of teas has been proven to be part of a healthy lifestyle. The sampling of studies above are just a drop in the bucket of a whole sea of research, which makes my tea-loving self feel very good.
